I get it though. Depending on where you live, your lifestyle, career, and possibly religious background, hemlines migrate up or down.
I doubt this outfit would fit well on one of the "dressing conservatively blogs," but I also doubt you'd see this outfit at a strip club.
I have some friends that live in the south, and all the dresses they wear hit at the knee or just above. I haven't kept to that rule since middle school. I guess my principle would have sent me home for the day.....
For me, it's all about feeling comfortable. I dont like to show skin EVERYWHERE. Either some on the top or some on the bottom, is what works for me. And, I actually think sundresses with cardigans are on the more conservative side of my closet, as I tend to dress a bit rougher and edgier in the colder months. ***oh and a little side note here...I'm actually wearing this belt backwards! Notice how there's no buckle? Thats because its in the back and its covered by the cardigan!
Since I have readers all over the world, my question to you is THIS: DO YOU FOLLOW ANY PARTICULAR DRESS RULES, AND HOW HIGH OR LOW A HEMLINE ARE YOU WILLING TO WEAR?

In my every day life I follow the finger tip rule, but at work I try and keep it less than 2-4 inches from the kneww. Sometimes I wear skirts that are too short at work though, so don't listen to me!
ReplyDeleteI don't think this outfit would particularly raise any eyebrows anywhere. Those shoes most definitely keep it from being conservative - they're way too cool for that.
ReplyDeleteHemlines, hm... I typically try to go no shorter than an inch or two above the knee but that's just because I spend most of my time not in pajamas at work. On the weekends I do have more casual skirts that are a wee bit shorter but not by much. I think that because while I'm not excatly tall at 5'7" somehow skirts end up shorter on me anyway than they're intended. You'll definitely never catch me buying a skirt or dress at Forever21!
hmm i think for me it really depends on whether or not i'm teaching that day. because i often get mistaken for a student, i really want to make the boundaries clear (so i wear "girlier" and much more conservative -ann taylor loft, dvf, etc- things than i would ever reach for on my days off)

ReplyDeletefor work: i never go above the knee. for fun: i have a habit of wearing dresses that my friends question are actually shirts. but i think the length of your skirt is perfect (and hardly conservative. i associate conservative with frumpy and stuffy. this dress is certainly not!)
ReplyDeletegreat dress...I think you can wear things that short since you have the body for it. I wear whatever is appropriate for the situation. I tend to wear shorter skirts/dresses in the winter when I can wear tights.

ReplyDeleteI live in the South and people wear all lengths from super short camo minis (usually paired with a white tank and colored bra lol) to ankle lengths because of their religion. Personally, now that I'm into my 30's and have a few kidlets, I like to keep my length to just a few inches about the knee. If I feel like I could bend over and bare my lady bits to the world, then I don't wear it. lol
Even though I'm a shorty patorty, just at the knee is the shortest I go. I'm a little old-fashioned that way. Plus, I gots big legs.

ReplyDeleteThe rule I go buy is that as long as when you bend over you dont flash anyone then your good to go. You need to keep you modesty in check. Plus if legs are out cover your boobs... do't show to much of a good thing!

ReplyDeleteI definitely have a comfort zone that changes depending on whether I can wear tights or not. The hemlines can be a bit shorter when I have other fabric covering me up, I've noticed. Lately, I've been playing with hemlines of lengths I never considered before, so I'm not sure where my idea length is anymore. (:
